Founded in 1961 as PN Indra Karya and in 1972 became PT Indra Karya (Persero) was at the beginning, engaged in general contracting activities. In the year 1978 the company was reorganized and changed its line of business to engineering and management consulting services. Since then, the company has been growing and was able to establish itself as a prominent engineering consulting firm in Indonesia.
In 1978, the Minister of Public Works as the Shareholder Authority reorganized and transformed the company's business field into an engineering consulting services company. At that time, as the first stepping stone in entering this new business field, the electricity sector was chosen, where there was not yet fierce competition in this segment.
In 1981, the Minister of Public Works made efforts to strengthen the company to support the development of the national construction industry. This was achieved by transferring a number of experts, technicians, and administrative staff from the Multipurpose Brantas River Basin Project to PT. Indra Karya.
The Government has added its capital participation in the form of land, office buildings, vehicles, laboratory equipment, survey and investigation equipment, computers, and others since 1981. Since then, PT. Indra Karya has expanded its business scope to include the development of water resources (with a focus on engineering large dams), survey and investigation works, as well as management and economics.
Although water resource development projects were already being obtained within the environment of the Directorate General of Water Resources of the Ministry of Public Works of the Republic of Indonesia in 1981, in terms of contract value, electrification works still dominated (85%). This market balance eventually reversed by the year 1987, where the total contract value within the Ministry of Public Works exceeded that in PLN (80%). However, it does not mean that the contract value in PLN experienced a decline.
In 1982, PT. Indra Karya successfully won an International Competitive Bidding for the Sengguruh Hydropower Project, funded by ADB, where PT. Indra Karya acted as the lead consultant. The project continued until 1989. The same achievement was also obtained in 1988 when PT. Indra Karya, as the lead consultant, won the bidding for two major hydropower projects funded by IBRD.
PT. Indra Karya (Persero) was established based on the Deed of Establishment number 108 dated December 20, 1972, which was later amended in 1998 with Notarial Deed number 123 dated March 31, 1998, and ratified by the Minister of Justice under Decree No. C.871 HT.01.04 dated January 11, 1999, published in the Additional State Gazette of the Republic of Indonesia dated October 10, 2000, number 81. The latest amendment was made in 2013 through Notarial Deed number 9 dated June 28, 2013, following the change in the Board of Directors based on the Decree of the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises No. SK-291/MBU/2013 dated June 27, 2013.
